Matt grew up in Scotland and spent much of his early youth kayaking and in the hills. He first visited Greenland at 19 on a mountaineering expedition and immediately fell in love with the place. Since that first trip, he’s spent 25 expedition seasons up north and the passion he has for adventures there has only grown. On the road to many places around the World to ski and climb, it’s still the mountains, glaciers and fjords of East Greenland that inspire most and have come to feel like home.
A friend recently asked if Matt wasn’t bored of visiting the same place; Greenland’s so huge and the breadth and depth of possible expeditions so wide, that few trips have been alike. The expeditions so far have varied from multiple crossings of the Ice Cap, through kayaking up the fjords to reach the mountains, sailing from Iceland to access a super-remote range, to dog sledding over the frozen fjords to look for first ski descents.
Matt is a dedicated skier and climber and has focused on different disciplines over the years, from competing in the Ice Climbing World Championships to telemark skiing and exploratory alpinism. He has a particular passion for ski mountaineering and free skiing. The common thread driving all of this is in having adventures in beautiful & wild places with a great bunch of people- something that will surely last a lifetime.
Based in Kulusuk, East Greenland, Matt is also a UIAGM/IFMGA High Mountain Guide, the highest worldwide qualification in mountaineering and ski guiding.
