He was flown to a hospital in Punta Arenas where he had surgery after doctors discovered his abdomen was infected with bacterial peritonitis. He died on Sunday. He led the Amundsen route - a 900-mile (1,448km) unsupported journey - and in doing so, became the only person to have completed the classic Antarctic routes of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen.
