Bhakti Sharma

Gender: Female
Nationalities: India.

Biography

The Feat: Indian swimmer Bhakti Sharma set a new world record this January when she swam 1.4 miles in 52 minutes. That distance and time may not sound so earth-shattering until you consider that she did it in the 1-degree waters of the Southern Ocean off the coast of the Antarctic peninsula. The 25-year-old from Rajasthan completed the journey in normal swimming attire without the aid of a wet suit as she skirted icebergs and other obstacles in the choppy seas.
Previous Record: British open-water swimmer Lewis Pugh held the previous record for farthest-south long-distance swim at 1 km (0.62 miles), set in 2005.
The Near-Miss Moment: An accomplished open-water swimmer, Sharma said she was only able to attempt her goal of swimming in Antarctica after securing the financial backing of her sponsor Hindustan Zinc.
