A Canadian team competing in the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge in Nevada this September broke the record for the world's fastest human-powered vehicle. Aerovelo's bullet-like recumbent bicycle, which is enclosed in an aerodynamic shell, raced to a speed of 86.6 mph with cyclist-cum-engineer Todd Reichert at the pedal. Aerovelo named the vehicle Eta after the Greek symbol used in engineering to denote efficiency. It has no windows and requires the pilot to navigate by viewing a screen connected to two tiny cameras outside.
Previous Record: Dutch cyclist Sebastiaan Bowier set the bar at 83.1 mph in a vehicle called VeloX 3 in 2013.
Todd graduated from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies with his PhD in 2011
